Microsoft Corporation has come out with a new custom AI chip, Maia 300, which it plans to ramp for multi-gigawatt deployments to meet its inference needs. MSFT's Maia 300 promises 40% more compute per megawatt than leading GPUs, and while Maia 100 and 200 flopped, this time could be different. We view this as a necessary step in the right direction for MSFT but have more unanswered questions on AI sales and OpenAI exposure in light of the move.
